KpcNet: Representing Objects as Part Keypoints

Popular computer vision tasks, like object detection and object counting, typically represent objects as bounding boxes or as extreme and center points. However, these representations can vary widely depending on different object poses, viewpoints, and occlusions. For instance, a person's center po

int may be located at the waist when they are standing, but when they are sitting, it may shift toward the chest area which may have totally different visual features. This is further exaggerated with partial occlusions since the center will now be defined based only on the visible regions. In some

cases, the center point may not even be on the object itself which can cause inaccurate predictions and wrong object counts. In this paper, we propose to use part keypoints, which are more defined and are consistent across various viewpoints, orientations, and occlusions. Our proposed Keypoint Clust

er Net (KpcNet) first detects part keypoints followed by a learned instance grouping that determines keypoints belonging to the same instance. Different from prior works, we do not require a pre-defined skeleton model that connects keypoints. Instead, we learn a metric space wherein keypoints of the

same instance are mapped close to each other while being far from other keypoint instances. We demonstrate in our experiments using human detection as our case study to better understand and visualize, that our proposed model detects partially occluded objects better than state-of-the-art object de

tectors.
